Migrante Melbourne Calls for Arroyo to Immediately Step Down, Condemns Declaration of State of Emergency
|
24 February 2006 – Melbourne, Australia. Migrante Melbourne, a community organisation of Filipinos in Victoria condemns the recent declaration of the National State of Emergency by the Philippine government of Gloria Macapagal Arroyo and call for her immediate resignation from office.
“The proclamation (made on the eve of commemoration of the 20th Edsa People Power uprising against the Marcos Dictatorship) demonstrates the Arroyo government’s arrogant abuse of power and desperation. For Filipino-Australians, it reveals her government’s illegitimacy, increasing isolation and disintegration.” “As we commemorate the spirit of Edsa, we are calling on all peace loving Filipinos and Australians alike to join us in standing up against tyranny and injustice and oppose the Gloria Macapagal Arroyo government’s move to further curtail civil and political rights in order for her remain in power.” said Migrante Melbourne chairperson Mr George Kotsakis.
“Arroyo should immediately vacate her presidency. She does not enjoy the trust of the Filipino people and the longer she stays, the worse it will hurt the country.” concludes Mr Kotsakis.
